For more than three decades, Ellie Mills, ChFC, CLU, LUTCF, has built her career and reputation on compassion, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to helping others secure their financial futures. A loyal NAIFA member since 1992 and owner of Ellie Mills Insurance Agency, Inc. in Miami, Florida, Mills found her calling in the insurance industry through personal tragedy and triumph.
At just 18, Ellie’s life was forever changed when her first husband was killed in a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver. The financial protection provided by life, health, and auto insurance gave her the stability she needed to rebuild during that devastating time. Later, after remarrying and building an event planning business with her husband, Hurricane Andrew destroyed their home, vehicles, and company. Those experiences revealed to her the profound importance of insurance—and ignited a passion for helping others safeguard what matters most.
Encouraged by a family friend to enter the profession, Ellie earned her 2-15 license and began her career in insurance, quickly realizing that her personal story gave her a unique ability to empathize with clients and guide them through life’s challenges. When her first manager introduced her to NAIFA (then NALU), he emphasized that joining meant committing to professionalism, ethics, and advocacy—principles that have guided her career ever since.
Today, Ellie specializes in wealth accumulation and retirement distribution planning as a Registered Investment Advisor Representative and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) while her team supports clients with their insurance needs. She finds deep fulfillment in helping clients create comprehensive financial plans that protect and grow their assets. “The most rewarding part,” she says, “is being the best thing that happens to someone on their worst day.”
Ellie’s leadership extends well beyond her clients. At a recent State Farm meeting attended by more than 500 professionals, she proudly represented NAIFA and inspired more than a dozen colleagues to join on the spot. It’s a powerful example of member advocacy in action—showing how one person’s enthusiasm and belief in the profession can strengthen the entire NAIFA community.
Ellie is also a committed to NAIFA advocacy, actively supporting NAIFA’s PACs and participating in legislative events such as Day on the Hill. She recognizes the critical role NAIFA plays in preserving the independence of financial professionals, defending key tax advantages for clients, and ensuring the stability of small businesses.
“NAIFA has been instrumental to my success,” Ellie shares. “It’s given me the tools, education, and advocacy I need to serve my clients with integrity and confidence.” She encourages others to join, reminding them of advice once shared with her: “If you’re not at the table, you’re part of the menu.”
As she continues to serve her clients and community, Ellie remains deeply grateful for the mentors, peers, and opportunities NAIFA has provided. She looks forward to mentoring the next generation of advisors—passing on not only her expertise, but also her belief that this profession offers one of the most meaningful ways to change lives for the better.
