The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) is thrilled to announce that Kathleen Owings has been named the 2024 Young Advisor Team Leader of the Year. This award celebrates outstanding leadership, dedication, and impact within the financial advisory industry, recognizing individuals who exemplify the highest standards of excellence.

Kathleen Owings, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2000, began her career as an active-duty officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, earning the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone. She served at Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Carson, Colorado; and overseas on multiple tours of duty.

Kathleen began her career in the financial services industry in 2007 and is one of the owners of Westbilt Financial Group in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She truly believes that being a financial advisor is her calling, not just a job. Kathleen is also the author of Put Your Money to Work: A Woman's Guide to Financial Confidence, empowering women to take control of their financial futures.

Documents are ever-present in the lives of insurance and financial professionals. From policy agreements to annuity contracts to the full slate of disclosures, written agreements and promises are important parts of what you do. 

Today, our nation celebrates one of its founding documents. Along with the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence ranks as the most revered document in the United States. On July 4th, 1776, as we all know, our American forebears used this document to proclaim their independence as a nation. The Constitution, the world’s oldest charter of government still in effect, came just over a decade later and serves as a promise to the American people of the obligations of the government and rights of the governed. 

I hope all of you who have come to Washington, D.C., for NAIFA’s Congressional Conference have taken the opportunity to see original versions of these awe-inspiring documents on display in the Rotunda of Freedom at the National Archives Building. If not, there’s always next year.

While you may not keep client agreements on display in a low-light, helium-filled case under bullet-proof glass, they represent another important type of freedom and independence. They provide American families with freedom from financial worry and small business owners with the independence to pursue the American Dream. On this day that we celebrate our nation’s independence and the freedoms we all enjoy, I am very proud to serve those of you who expand that independence to financial matters for so many Americans.

The Foundation for Financial Service Professionals has announced the recipients of the Kenneth Black Jr. Journal Author Awards for articles published in the Journal of Financial Service Professionals in 2023. Since 1988, the Foundation has recognized the top three articles published in a specific volume (six issues within the same calendar year) with these annual awards. 

In celebration of Financial Literacy Month, Life Happens has created a social media toolkit of posts and graphics available to all members who utilize their social media platforms to raise awareness of the importance of financial literacy. The images are co-branded with both the NAIFA and Life Happens logos.

This week we brought staff and leaders together to host a new member orientation for the Texas state chapter. With so many new members coming into the NAIFA Family from the merger with FSP, the NAIFA-Texas board thought it would be a great idea to supplement the orientation that NAIFA holds every week with their "Welcome to Your State Chapter" so that they could tell members all about the history, culture, and activities that make NAIFA-Texas uniquely NAIFA-Texas.

We're pleased to congratulate loyal NAIFA member Cheryl Canzanella, CLU, ChSNC, LUTCF, on her new position with NAIFA partner Fairway Independent Mortgage. Cheryl will take over the role of HECM Business Development Manager - Retirement Solutions.

Since joining NAIFA in 2010, Cheryl has been active in the NAIFA community. She is a Past President of NAIFA-Northeast Florida and has served in leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels. She is also a recipient of NAIFA-FL's President’s award. In 2019, she was recognized as NAIFA’s Young Advisor Team Leader of the Year. Cheryl is also a Founding Past President of Women in Insurance & Financial Services (WIFS) Northeast Florida.

NAIFA's Annual Congressional Conference bolsters NAIFA’s prestige among lawmakers and industry partners and enhances our standing as the leading voice for insurance and financial professionals.
