At Pinnacle Wealth Advisors, John Perras has built a career defined by adaptability, relationships, and a deep commitment to serving clients through every stage of life. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, his journey into the financial services profession began in an unexpected way but quickly evolved into a lifelong calling.
In the early 1980s, while working as a legal investigator and considering law school, John came across a newspaper advertisement that would ultimately change the trajectory of his career. What began as a simple inquiry led him to MassMutual in 1982, where he entered an industry that looked very different from what it is today. At the time, the profession centered primarily on life insurance, annuities, and disability coverage. Financial planning as we know it had yet to take shape.
Over time, John grew alongside the evolution of the industry. As financial planning emerged and client needs became more complex, he adapted his approach by expanding his expertise and building a comprehensive practice rooted in long-term relationships and holistic guidance. With mentorship, persistence, and a forward-looking mindset, he developed Pinnacle Wealth Advisors into a thriving business.
Throughout his career, John found the greatest reward in the relationships he built. From clients to colleagues, the profession introduced him to people and opportunities he never could have anticipated. As those client relationships matured, so did the nature of the work. What began as helping individuals accumulate and protect assets evolved into guiding them through increasingly complex decisions around retirement income, healthcare, Social Security, and long-term care. For many of his clients, John became a trusted presence not just during their working years, but well into retirement.
Understanding the importance of continuity, John took a thoughtful approach to succession planning. More than a decade ago, he sold his practice to a carefully selected successor, ensuring clients would continue to receive the same level of care and attention. Today, he remains involved as a consultant, maintaining relationships and supporting the firm in a semi-retired capacity.
John’s connection to NAIFA dates back to 1983, when involvement was strongly encouraged within his agency. What began as an introduction quickly became a meaningful part of his professional life. He stepped into leadership roles early on, eventually serving as president of his local chapter.
Throughout the years, John has seen firsthand the critical role NAIFA plays in advocacy and representation. From regulatory changes to major economic disruptions like the Great Recession, his career has been shaped by moments that underscored the importance of having a strong voice for the industry. He navigated shifts such as the transition to fee- based planning, evolving compliance requirements, and broader structural changes within financial service, all while continuing to serve clients and grow his practice.
His experience has also given him a clear perspective on the profession today. While he still sees financial services as a rewarding and impactful career path, he recognizes that it has become more complex and demanding. Licensing requirements, regulatory standards, and the breadth of knowledge needed can be challenging for new entrants. For those considering the field, he believes mentorship is key, learning the business from the ground up and gaining experience under the guidance of seasoned professionals.
Now, after decades in the industry, John reflects on a career that has been both fulfilling and impactful. His story is one of growth, resilience, and dedication—not only to his clients, but to the profession as a whole. He is also quick to recognize the personal support that made it all possible, especially from his wife of 40 years, Pam, whose encouragement and partnership have been a constant throughout his journey.
