Exciting things have happened to Craig Lytle since he won Advisor Today’s Four Under Forty Award in 2010. He has opened a new agency and has almost earned his CLU designation. Here are some of his thoughts on what it takes to succeed in this business.

Advisor Today: Has your practice changed since you won the award?

Craig Lytle: I have accepted a role as a general agent with Transamerica Agency Network Independent Distribution and I opened an agency office in Newark, Delaware. Additionally, I work as a moderator for The American College LUTCF courses.

AT: What else are you working on?

Lytle: With a primary focus on comprehensive financial planning, life insurance is a core priority within any well- designed financial plan. Many clients have multiple needs and priorities. Hybrid life products offering provisions for critical and chronic illnesses, as well as tax-deferred growth and tax-free access, are very useful when properly positioned and installed.

AT: Do you have any plans to pursue other areas this year?

Lytle: I am one course away from completing the CLU designation.

AT: What advice would you give to advisors who are just beginning their careers?

Lytle: Distinguish between your interest and your commitments. Develop a business plan and a marketing plan that you believe in, and then look for a mentor to help you remain disciplined as you implement tactics and strategies to build your practice.

AT: Would you advise them to join NAIFA?

Lytle: Membership in NAIFA is an absolute must! Get involved in our association to further develop and preserve the integrity of our industry.
