April Is National Financial Literacy Month

gregoryThe Round Table of New York will recognize Gregory Serio, Esq., the former Superintendent of Insurance for the State of New York and Executive Director of NAIFA–NYS with its Lifetime Achievement Award at its Annual Black Tie Dinner on December 5, 2016.

Serio, a Partner and Managing Director of Park Strategies LLC, was significantly involved in New York State’s and the regulatory community’s response to the atrocities of 9/11.  He coordinated the New York Department’s response and recovery from those events working with local, state and federal agencies, the insurance community’s many sectors and individual insureds to expedite settlement of claims and restore the financial condition of the New York property insurance and life insurance industries.

Superintendent Serio also served as the Chairman of the NAIC’s Government Affairs Task Force, the federal relations arm of the organization.  In that capacity, he led the NAIC’s Washington office efforts on the U.S. House Financial Services Committee’s SMART legislation on modernization of insurance regulation and discussions on the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act.

As Superintendent, Serio also served as a commissioner of the International Commission on Holocaust-Era Insurance Claims, working closely with and testifying before Congress alongside ICHEIC chairman and former United States Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger on the settlement of American-based Holocaust insurance claims. Serio is a graduate of Albany Law School of Union University and the State University of New York at Albany.

Each year, the Round Table of New York presents its Lifetime Achievement Award to an individual who has made significant contributions to the insurance and financial services industry. The award recognizes individuals for their accomplishments in the areas of professional ethics, education and industry leadership.  Fifteen past industry luminaries who have received this award include Joseph J. Melone, CLU, JD, CEO of Prudential (2002), David F. Woods, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, CEO Emeritus of NAIFA (2007), Sy Sternberg, CLU, Chairman of the Board, New York Life Insurance Co. (2008), Thomas E. Workman, JD, President & CEO Emeritus of Life Insurance Council of NY (2009), Laurence Barton, Ph.D., CAP, President & CEO Emeritus of The American College (2010), Robert Kerzner, CLU, ChFC, President & CEO of LIMRA, LOMA, and LL Global Inc (2012), and Todd M. Schoon, CLU, ChFC, JD, Senior Vice President of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (2014).

Lou DiCerbo, CLU, ChFC, Chairman of The Round Table of New York, stated, “Gregory Serio, Esq., Executive Director of NAIFA-NYS, is leading a campaign to rally NAIFA, our profession, and rekindle the spirit of working together for the benefit of all our stakeholders.”

Peter Browne, LUTCF, Member of The Round Table of New York Executive Committee and a 2015 John Newton Russell Memorial Award Recipient, said that Serio represents “The Best of The Best of New York State Insurance Commissioners.”
