Happy Fourth of July!

By NAIFA on 7/2/19 11:38 AM

The Fourth of July holiday famously commemorates the Declaration of Independence, a document giving voice to the aspirations that led to the founding of our nation. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and the Committee of Five proclaimed that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the “unalienable” rights of every American.

Not to diminish the achievement of the founders or sacrifices made by many generations since who have defended and guaranteed those rights, but when I think of these founding principles – life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness – it strikes me that they align very neatly with the greater good insurance and financial advisors provide Main Street Americans.

The Declaration says that securing these rights is the reason governments are instituted, and indeed we look to our national, state, and civic officials to provide sound laws and regulations for our protection. The main thrust of NAIFA’s advocacy mission is to work with decisionmakers to encourage policies that benefit our members and Main Street consumers. But we know that government cannot and should not do it all. Ultimately, people must take responsibility for their own wellbeing and that of their families, and that is where the role of agents and advisors is so important.

Life insurance, long-term care, annuities, retirement planning, workplace benefits, investments, and other products and services NAIFA members provide are essential to the ability of many Americans to live, live in comfort, and live fulfilled lives. They promote health, bolster security, offer independence, and encourage prosperity. They are as American as the Fourth of July.

Just as you look after the interests of your clients, NAIFA looks out for your interests. Your professional association has revitalized itself through our NAIFA 20/20 strategic plan to offer agents and advisors the best political advocacy, education and training, certifications and designations, and networking opportunities in the business. When you see the NAIFA blue triangle logo, you know there is a strong, dedicated association – a team of your colleagues, volunteers, and professional staff – working together to give you the best opportunity to succeed in your career calling.

John Adams wrote that Independence Day “ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

I hope you can step away from the great work you are doing on behalf of your clients for one day and celebrate our nation’s independence with friends and family. Watch a parade or a ballgame. Have a picnic or attend a fireworks display. Maybe even take in a “shew.”

On behalf of NAIFA’s staff, the Board of Directors, and myself, I sincerely wish you a happy and enjoyable Fourth of July. When you return to work on behalf of your clients, you may rest assured that NAIFA’s team is also hard at work on your behalf.

Best Regards,

Kevin Mayeux, CAE
NAIFA Chief Executive Officer
