Gut feelings, prayers, and even “pure vibes” are shaping some of the most important decisions in Americans’ lives. That’s the eye-opening takeaway from a new Life Happens survey conducted by Talker Research for Life Insurance Awareness Month and recently featured in both the National Enquirer and the New York Post.

According to the survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, seven in 10 people admit they rely on intuition (36%), prayers (29%), or general vibes (19%) when making major life choices. These range from deciding on new jobs and relationships to making investments, purchasing homes, and even planning for the future.

Generational differences stood out in the results. Nearly one-third of baby boomers said they purchased a home based on holistic signs, while younger generations were more likely to say social media or even “cosmic signs” played a role. Despite these unconventional influences, 71% of respondents reported having no regrets about their decisions.

Where Financial Planning Fits In

While trusting your heart may work in some areas of life, financial decisions call for a balanced approach. NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux put it best in the New York Post feature:

“Leading with your head, but informed by your heart, is a great way to make solid financial choices. But if you’re already consulting up to seven people when making a big decision, why not make sure one of them is a financial professional? The bottom line is that your financial well-being can enhance all your other decision-making.”

The survey also revealed that only 7% of respondents turn to a financial professional before making large purchases, ranking below Google searches and social media. This highlights a major opportunity for advisors and agents to step in and provide trusted guidance.

A Cosmic Nudge Toward Life Insurance

The study also uncovered that while 34% of respondents have life insurance, many admitted they would only prioritize long-term planning after a health scare or crisis. Life Happens Executive Director Brian Steiner, quoted in both features, emphasized the importance of taking action early:

“People may not know that life insurance is an easy and affordable way to get this planning started. But don’t wait, because the best time to get it is when you are young and healthy. It can be more complicated if you have a health scare or diagnosis. And if a cosmic nudge is helpful, then consider this your sign from the universe to get the life insurance coverage you need.”

As Life Insurance Awareness Month continues, the survey findings are a reminder of just how much misinformation and hesitation still exist when it comes to financial security. Gut instincts and vibes may feel reassuring, but without proper planning, Americans risk leaving themselves and their families unprotected.

That’s where financial professionals play a critical role, bridging the gap between intuition and informed decision-making. By engaging with clients and communities, they can ensure that major life milestones are backed by both confidence and security.
